Reasearch Project on migratory route of leatherbacks In 2016, a leatherback turtle that was tagged in New England in 2012 was found nesting on our beaches. Our president contacted the researcher in New England to propose to reattach a transmitter to the same turtle to know its migratory route back to northern waters. Since 2018 ATMAR and researchers from the New England Aquarium began with us a joint project to learn about the migratory route of the leatherback turtles that nest on our beaches. In 2020 the project was stopped due to the Covid -19 pandemic.
Community Service After the disaster that occurred in Puerto Rico due to Hurricane María in September 2017, our organization took steps to offer some services to the community: 1) Grupo médicos para la Montaña offered services in our center for free that included delivery of baby formula , gifts for children and home visits to care for people in need, 2) Free veterinary clinic for community pets, 3) Acupuncture and aroma therapy clinic, 4) With the help of another NGO we distribute water filters and first-rate products need to several families who lost everything.

Notice: Sea Turtles are Endangered and Protected Species under Puerto Rico State Law and USA Endangered Species Act. All activities shown here with people interacting or managing sea turtles, eggs, or remainings of sea turtles are under special permit given to ATMAR by Puerto Rico DNRA and US Fish and Wildlife Service.
Beach Restoration Project Since 2018 we are conducting a beach restoration project with National Fish and Wildlife Foundation funds. After Hurricane María the work started with removal of fallen trees and obstacles on the beach that block nesting turtles, that includes reforestation of the beach. From 2020 to 2022 we are developing a 3 years new restoration project for leatherbacks nesting beaches that includes, removal of fallen trees, removal of exotic vegetation, removal of exotic predators, reforestation, beach clean up, control of light pollution and placement of warning signs.
